Introduction

Aquaculture has the potential to significantly contribute to fish production and sustainable development with particular respect to such key issues such as poverty reduction, food and livelihood security, balanced nutrition, wealth creation, foreign exchange earnings and coastal-rural development. However, lack of access to specialized training and skills required to manage aquaculture as a business enterprise is a major problem confronting the industry at national and regional level. There is, therefore, an urgent need to improve the sector’s performance. This can be achieved by relevant hands-on training through demonstrations, pilot projects and training courses with a strong applied component.

For aquaculture industry to be economically socially and environmentally sustainable it will require well informed investors as well as adequately trained and experienced staff to handle all aspects of aquaculture production and value chain geared toward meeting further growth.
